The holiday season is pretty much upon us. This month we will stress over Halloween with the decision "What to Wear" and the many parties to attend. This takes a lot of our time and before we know it we are shopping for Thanksgiving dinner. We ask ourselves how large a turkey and then when it's in the oven we worry whether it's large enough, will there be enough white meat for all the people that only eat white meat, are there enough different types of salad will the new stuffing recipe be as delicious as my old recipe. We'll barely have the second or third dishwasher load back in the cupboards before the stores open the next morning at 5:00am. We run to the stores and start buying our Christmas, Holiday gifts with or without a list. Did we make the right purchases, we have almost a month to worry about our gifts and still time to make another trip to the mall return the gifts buy more and wrap the ones that are being shipped. At least now we don't have to stand in line at the post office if we print the labels on our home printer.

On All Hallows’ eve, the ancient Celts would place a skeleton on their window sill to represent the departed. Originating in Europe, these lanterns were first carved from a turnip or rutabaga. Believing that the head was the most powerful part of the body, containing the spirit and the knowledge, the Celts used the "head" of the vegetable to frighten off the embodiment of superstitions. Welsh, Irish and British myth are full of legends of the Brazen Head, which may be a folk memory of the widespread ancient Celtic practice of headhunting - the results of which were often nailed to a door lintel or brought to the fireside to speak their wisdom. The name jack-o'-lantern can be traced back to the Irish legend of Stingy Jack, a greedy, gambling, hard-drinking old farmer. He tricked the devil into climbing a tree and trapped him by carving a cross into the tree trunk. In revenge, the devil placed a curse on Jack, condemning him to forever wander the earth at night with the only light he had: a candle inside of a hollowed turnip. The carving of pumpkins is associated with Halloween in North America[14] where pumpkins are both readily available and much larger- making them easier to carve than turnips. Many families that celebrate Halloween carve a pumpkin into a frightening or comical face and place it on their doorstep after dark. The American tradition of carving pumpkins preceded the Great Famine period of Irish immigration and was originally associated with harvest time in general, not becoming specifically associated with Halloween until the mid-to-late 19th century.

The imagery surrounding Halloween is largely an amalgamation of the Halloween season itself, works of Gothic and horror literature, in particular novels Frankenstein and Dracula, and nearly a century of work from American filmmakers and graphic artists,[23] and British Hammer Horror productions, also a rather commercialized take on the dark and mysterious. Particularly in America, symbolism is inspired by classic horror films (which contain fictional figures like Frankenstein's monster and The Mummy). Elements of the autumn season, such as pumpkins, corn husks, and scarecrows, are also prevalent. Homes are often decorated with these types of symbols around Halloween.

Eight years ago at the first Seattle gift show Colleen and I attended we met Aunt Ali who makes the wonderful Toffee Pretzels. Aunt Ali was giving samples of her toffee pretzels and of course we couldn't resist. She hand dips the pretzels in her secret toffee mixture to create this delicious toffee pretzel. We ordered some for our baskets and we also took some samples with us to eat during viewing all the terrific items at the gift show. Needless to say the samples were gone before we left the building. Legacy Boutique has been using Aunt Ali's products in most of our gourmet birthday to corporate gift baskets ever since.
